The local winners of the Aviva Community Fund competition say they’re very pleased to have financial assistance moving forward.
Colleen Cameron, the chair of the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society, says she burst into tears when they were announced the winners of $100,000 Dec. 5.
She says the money will go toward the community room in a building with 10 units on Hope Lane.
Cameron tells The Hawk the victory means more than just the money.
“I burst into tears- it was very, very emotional,” she says. “Over the moon, just so excited- it’s just so affirming.”
Cameron says community support is what made it all happen.
“We’re so grateful for the support,” she says. “That’s what’s so huge about this- the community coming together and supporting us, and this.”
Cameron says the community room will probably cost $125,000.
She says they hope to pour the foundation soon, start building at the end of April, and welcome residents in August or September.
