The Farmer to Farmer Retreat is coming to the Baddeck.
Jody Nelson, the coordinator of the Island Food Network, says it’s an opportunity for farmers to talk about their operations with each other.
She says farmers don’t have enough opportunity to connect when they’re in an isolated setting.
Nelson tells The Hawk the event is the first of its kind for Cape Breton.
“The content is all led by the participants,” she says. “Where there are events like conferences or expos where experts are brought in, this is more focused on what’s going on here and what expertise we can share amongst ourselves here.”
Nelson says they’re curious as to what will come from the event since it’s participant-driven, but it will be facilitated.
She says it’s a great time to have the discussion.
“I think us farmers are far too busy the rest of the year to get together- this is quiet time for farmers,” she says. “Livestock producers are still busy, but the hay is in the barn (and) this is the time where we order our seeds and make plans for the coming year.”
The event takes place at the Baddeck Forks Hall Saturday.
A hike starts at noon; discussions get underway at 2 p.m.
Nelson says there’s also a chance for farmers to enjoy food prepared by a local chef.
