One of the three people charged in relation to a carjacking in Antigonish Co. is expected back in court Thursday.
Police say they received a call from Hwy. 4 in Tracadie early one morning in August.
They say the dispatcher could hear a woman screaming and tires squealing, and they were told three men took a man and woman’s car at knife point; the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the woman had minor injuries.
RCMP say officers found the vehicle in the Pomquet area, with the knife used to threaten the victims inside.
They charged Jean-Luc Cote, 22, of Malignant Cove, who was arrested shortly after the carjacking, with aggravated assault and four breaches; he was released from custody on conditions.
Cote entered not guilty pleas to all of his charges in October; he’s expected to change his plea to guilty on some and have a sentencing hearing in Antigonish Provincial Court Thursday.
Ellsworth Darren DeCoste, 30, of Tracadie, who was arrested a few days after the attack, was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, robbery and two breaches in the case.
He entered not guilty pleas to all of his charges in October; he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, two assault with a weapon charges, one count of assault causing bodily harm and two breaches in November.
He was sentenced to eight months in jail, which is considered time already served after his arrest, and a four-month conditional sentence to be served in the community (house arrest), followed by 12 months of probation in January.
His brother, Jed Douglas DeCoste, 27, of Tracadie was arrested shortly after, and was originally charged with aggravated assault, assault, weapon possession and eight breaches.
He pleaded guilty to assault, weapon possession and five of his breaches, and was sentenced to three months in jail, which was considered the time served since he was arrested, and nine months of house arrest in November; his aggravated assault charge and the three remaining breaches were dropped.
