The MLA for Inverness says provincial funding for the community’s harness racing track is a good investment.
Officials with the provincial government announced close to $140-thousand for the Inverness Raceway as part of their 2018-19 budget unveiled last month.
Allan MacMaster, Inverness MLA, tells The Hawk he’s pleased with the annual provincial investment.
“I think it’s a good investment; it generates a lot of economic activity in the area,” he says. “The races are about as grassroots as you can get it.”
MacMaster says the raceway brings a lot of visitors to the community.
“The agricultural activity and the horse owners that are coming in every week on Wednesday nights or Sunday afternoon- there’s a lot of economic activity associated with that,” he says. “But when you consider that it is a unique attraction and we look at how much tourism has grown, last year (was) by nine per cent.”
MacMaster says Inverness has become a golf destination, but visitors want to do other things while they’re in the area.
