The Northern Selects are in a must-win situation heading into their fifth and final round-robin game at the 2018 National Female Midget Hockey Championship in Bridgewater.
The Selects (1-2-1), who have lost three straight since a win in their tournament opener, face Team West (4-0-0) at 3:30 p.m.
They need to beat Team West, the top team in the six-team tournament, and have Metro, the last-place host team, beat Team Quebec in the evening game to finish in the top four and advance to the semi-finals Friday.
The gold and bronze medal games are Saturday.
River Denys’ Colten Ellis and Team Canada take on the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the 2018 U18 World Hockey Championship in Russia.
The Canadians (3-1-0-0) won all four of their preliminary round games to finish in top spot in Group A; the Czechs (1-0-3-0) were fourth in Group B.
That game gets underway at 11:30 a.m.
The winner advances to the semi-finals Saturday; the gold and bronze medal games are Sunday.
Four members of the Cape Breton West Islanders are representing the province at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League‘s 2018 Excellence Challenge in Boisbriand.
Defencemen Neil MacLean and Dell Welton and forwards Chase Ellis and Matthew Ellis were among 20 players named to Team Nova Scotia in early April.
They open the tournament against Team Newfoundland at 3:30 p.m.; their second game is against Team Quebec-White Friday afternoon.
The Excellence Challenge is an annual tournament to showcase more than 100 of the top prospects from the region ahead of the upcoming QMJHL draft.
It features four other teams- New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and two from Quebec.
The tournament wraps up Sunday.
