Officials in the Town of Port Hawkesbury say a few more budget deliberation meetings are scheduled for May.
Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, says town officials also met before May’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night.
She says two years of gas tax funding, which totals close to $500,000, has been set aside for the Destination Reeves St. project.
After the meeting, Chisholm-Beaton said those talks can shape the next few years for the town.
“We certainly have an idea of some of the direction we’d like to go in,” she said. “It’s just going to be a matter of time looking at the numbers and deciding what do we want to prioritize in terms of budget, and what do we want the next couple of years to look like.”
Chisholm-Beaton has said there was no early indication of what could happen to tax rates.
She said councillors have resources at the ready to help provide all the necessary information.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to meet enough and answer enough questions,” she said. “Our council will have an opportunity to meet with (town finance director) Erin MacEachen if they need more information or meet with our CAO, and a take a look and feel like they are confident before that motion is made.”
Chisholm-Beaton said they might have an aggressive timeline, but they hope to have the budget finalized by June.
