Inverness Co. municipal officials say members of their accessibility committee are working to make sure there’s awareness of government grants that are available.
Councillors voted to progress and form the group during a council meeting last July; membership was approved late last year.
After Monday’s municipal council meeting, Betty Ann MacQuarrie, the county’s warden, said a campaign was held last week to promote awareness around the issue of accessibility.
“People who don’t usually use a wheelchair were using a wheelchair just to get the experience of what that actually feels like and what barriers come into play when you’re in one,” she said. “You don’t realize it until you’re actually sitting in one so that really did create an awareness.”
MacQuarrie says they’ve met roughly three times so far and they’re doing great work.
She says an accessibility advocate, Callum MacQuarrie, is a strong-willed young man who wants to see his community and the rest of the county accessible.
