Members of a family in Antigonish have received a $6,000,000 settlement from an obstetrician and officials with the former Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority.
Cullan Chisholm, 7, suffered severe brain injuries during his delivery at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish in July of 2010.
A statement of claim by family members indicates Dr. Allison Ball and two nurses missed signs on the fetal heart monitor the baby wasn’t getting enough oxygen; he was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.
Chisholm has severe cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment.
The physician is responsible for $4,000,000 of the settlement; hospital officials will pay the other $2,000,000.
It’s the largest personal injury settlement in provincial legal history.
