Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish wasn’t surprised to see Sean Fraser retake Central Nova for the Liberal party during the federal election Monday night.
Town council has worked closely with Fraser on a number of projects over the past few years and she’s looking forward to continuing that work, she said in an interview.
“He’s very accessible to us as a council whenever we need to talk to him or to clarify things or just ask for his help… so, I’m not surprised that Sean won and I think he will continue to do [good] for our community.”
The town has been working on several projects with Fraser during his time as the MP, including getting St. FX away from oil energy and onto the town’s electric grid, which would see the university using 85 per cent clean energy.
“The environment is high on the priority list for the Liberal government,” Boucher said. “With that in their priority and with Sean Fraser working for us we’re hoping that we’ll be able to get [the project] across the finish line.”
Preliminary numbers show that Fraser took the riding with a margin of over 5200 votes.
Boucher also extended her congratulations to the rest of the candidates for a civil campaign.
