Last day for UARB hearing on local biomass project

The co-chair of a local environmental group says members of the general public will be surprised when they hear all the details surrounding a proposed biomass facility in Point Tupper.

Since Monday, the province's Utility and Review Board has been hearing presentations from organizations that support the facility, and those opposing it.

Neal Livingston, the co-chair of the Margaree Environmental Association, tells The Hawk the proposal is misleading.

"This plant they want to build is not needed capacity for Nova Scotia Power- it will not reduce coal burning, and it will raise the amount of greenhouse gases, not reduce them," he says.

Livingston says most groups feel there is enough cutting in the forestry sector right now.

He says his group would not be opposed to a smaller facility.

"We are not against a smaller biomass use in Nova Scotia- for instance, if NewPage built a smaller biomass plant around their existing wood waste stream," he says.

Livingston's group registered as a formal intervenor in the hearing.

Friday is the last scheduled day for the hearing on the proposed $208 million biomass facility.

NewPage and Nova Scotia Power agreed to build the facility in April.
