University students come together for project at StFX

Graduate and undergraduate students from four different universities have come together at StFX as part of a national program.

The students from StFX, Acadia, Memorial and the University of Montreal set up weather monitoring devices around Antigonish with the help of industry professionals.

The work was done as a part of the Create Program; it brings students together to work collaboratively and address significant scientific challenges.

Carrie-Ellen Gabriel, the Create student representative for StFX, tells The Hawk all of the work was hands on.

"One was at the Central Supplies, in the back, one was over at MacGillivray Fuels next to the Landing, and then two on campus," she says. "We broke into small groups so that we could get a really good sense of setting them up, and then we compared the results afterward."

Gabriel says the experience will benefit the students in the future.

"I think the benefit of this program is it's allowing students to access real practical things, and sometimes, very industry-related things that prepare us for the workforce after we graduate."

Gabriel says a $1.5-million grant made the project possible.
