Man charged with unlawful confinement arrested in Sydney

A suspect arrested in an unlawful confinement case in Richmond Co. has been taken into custody in Sydney.

RCMP say Justin Daniel MacLeod, 31, met a woman at a party and offered her a ride home, but instead brought her to a secluded area and locked her in his family cabin one Friday night in April.

They say he left, the woman escaped, broke into another cabin to hide, and eventually fled; she wasn't hurt.

Cape Breton Regional Police officers arrested MacLeod the next day; he was held in custody for the weekend, and released on strict conditions when he appeared in court the following Monday.

MacLeod, who pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful confinement and breach of conditions in June, was expected to stand trial in December; lawyers for both the Crown and defence said they had reached a resolution, but MacLeod said he wanted a new lawyer.

He was scheduled for a status hearing in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court Monday morning; he didn't show up, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

MacLeod was taken into custody Monday afternoon; his next court date has not been determined.
