Guidelines set for new accessibility committee in Antigonish

Town councillors in Antigonish have approved the terms of reference for a new accessibility committee.

The terms were approved at February's regular town council meeting Monday night.

After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the town's mayor, said part of the terms of reference includes the make-up of the soon-to-be formed committee.

"We'll have two councillors plus (the) mayor on the committee- we'll also have four members of the community on the committee as well," she said. "Our CAO will be on the committee as a non-voting member, and we will pull in from any department that we need, depending on the topic being discussed at that time."

Boucher said at least two of the committee members should have accessibility challenges so they have good perspective when they make decisions.

She said accessibility looks different to many different people, but the committee should make the town more accessible to everyone.

"(You have) people in wheelchairs, people on crutches, people with severe mobility issues, then you have the mothers that have strollers," she said. "It's convenience for them, but it's a necessity for other people, and we have everybody in between."

Boucher said they hope to have a committee struck within the next few months.
