West Islanders open Major Midget Atlantics in Miramichi

The Cape Breton West Islanders open play at the 2017 Major Midget Atlantic Hockey Championship in Miramichi.

Cape Breton West plays the Kensington Wild on Thursday afternoon.

The Islanders won the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League title with a three-game sweep of Dartmouth in the league final; the Wild are the PEI champions.

Cape Breton West head coach Kyle MacDonald told The Hawk Morning Show they feel they have a realistic chance to win Atlantics and advance to nationals.

"It's something our guys want, and obviously our approach is the one game at a time, but I think it's pretty motivating to have a chance to play at that tournament, the Telus Cup," he says. "It's so hard to get to, and it would be a once-in-a-lifetime thing."

Game time is 4 p.m; The Hawk will have period-by-period updates.

The Islanders' second game is against the Moncton Flyers on Friday morning.
