Man found guilty in Inverness Co. sexual interference case

A 68-year-old suspect charged in relation to an incident at an Inverness Co. campground has been convicted in the case.

Pius Peter MacDonald was arrested following an incident at the Ainslie Village Campground in August 2015.

MacDonald originally pleaded not guilty; he then pleaded guilty to sexual interference in March 2016.

MacDonald applied to withdraw his guilty plea during a July hearing; the judge granted his request, and he pleaded not guilty again.

His trial was held in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court in December, and the judge reserved decision.

A verdict was expected in January, but the judge said he wasn't ready.

On Thursday morning in Port Hawkesbury, MacDonald was found guilty.

Judge Warren Zimmer said he found the complainant to be both credible and reliable in her testimony, and that her testimony was consistent with other witnesses
including prior statements made by MacDonald, up to a certain point.

Zimmer said he was satisfied that the Crown had proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that there was touching for a sexual purpose; he said he would elaborate on the matter at sentencing, which is scheduled for May 30.
