West Islanders continue preparations for nationals

The head coach of the Cape Breton West Islanders says preparations ahead of the national championship are winding down.

The Islanders booked their spot at nationals with a win at the 2017 Major Midget Atlantic Hockey Championship earlier in April, in Miramichi.

They play their first game of the Telus Cup against Team Quebec in Prince George, B.C. on Monday afternoon.

Cape Breton West head coach Kyle MacDonald told The Hawk Morning Show they've been busy at practice leading up to the six-team national tournament.

"We just want to perfect everything. There's plenty to work on, especially when you're going to compete for a national championship," he said. "Our focus is just on getting better in every little area, so lots to work on, and I think we'll be well-prepared for Quebec on Monday."

There will be a send-off rally for the Islanders at the Antigonish Arena from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday night.

The event is free and open to everyone.
