Rally held for Islanders ahead of nationals

A big crowd turned out for a send-off rally for the Cape Breton West Islanders as they head off to compete for a national title.

The Islanders will take part in the 2017 National Midget Hockey Championship in Prince George, B.C.; they leave Saturday.

A rally took place at the Antigonish Arena Thursday night.

After the event, Kyle MacDonald, Cape Breton West's head coach, told The Hawk it was great for the players to see the support they have in the area.

"It has to motivate them, leaving here having a full rink like that come out and support us- I thought it was incredible, and we knew that anyway," he said. "There was a lot of buzz and stuff like that was created throughout playoffs and good crowds throughout the year- that means a lot to our team, and we're very thankful to have such great support."

The Islanders play their first game in the six-team tournament against Team Quebec Monday afternoon.
