Strong prices expected at outset of lobster season, says association president

The president of a local fishermen's association says many people in the industry are expecting good prices at the start of lobster season.

Setting day for most lobster fishermen in the area is Saturday.

Brendan Doyle, the president of the Gulf Bonafide Fishermen's Association, tells The Hawk he thinks prices should start off strong because there isn't as much product already on the market.

"Normally, as more people get at it, there's the expectation for things to level out a bit, but all indications are that there's not a lot of lobster held over or available," he says. "Everybody's expecting a strong start, and hopefully that's something that will carry through the season."

Doyle says new regulations mean there will be an added emphasis on safety enforcement with regard to wearing life vests.

He says cooler water temperatures may mean lower catches initially, but that anything is possible.

"I wouldn't be surprised (by lower initial catch totals), but in all honesty, nothing surprises me anymore because, you know, they call it fishing,"  he says, "and you find out once you get into it (that) you can guess all you want, you can think you know what's going on, and then it'll prove you different."

Doyle says there should be no weather-related restrictions on setting day.
