Local sports preview (Sunday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders are going for gold at the 2017 Telus Cup in Prince George, B.C.

The Islanders take on Team Quebec in the gold medal game of the national midget hockey championship.

Cape Breton West advanced with a 2-1 win against Team Ontario in the semi-finals Saturday; Team Quebec edged Team West 4-3 in overtime in the other semi-final.

The teams met in the tournament opener Monday; the Islanders won that game 2-1.

They are already assured of the best-ever finish for a local team at the event; the Antigonish Novas won bronze in 1981, the only local team to ever win a medal.

An Atlantic team has never won gold in the history of the tournament.

Puck drop is 7 p.m.; the game is being broadcast nationally on TSN.
