Port Hawkesbury Paper shuts down for the week

Port Hawkesbury Paper has been shut down for the week.

Archie MacLachlan, First Vice-President of Unifor Local 972, says there's probably less sales this time of year.

He says the decision impacts a lot of people.

There are roughly 350 employees at the mill.

MacLachlan tells The Hawk there's more feeling the effects, one way or another.

"It effects a lot of people in the seven Eastern counties," MacLachlan says, "because you know, we have contractors... truckers bringing wood in, and they're not bringing wood in for this week."

He says essential union services are in this week so there will probably be around 10 employees per shift.

MacLachlan says the shutdown could have been longer or at a worse time.

He says in terms of shutdowns, they've been lucky for the last five years.

"We've been very fortunate for the last five years," he says. "We've taken very little down time over the last five years, and this is the first week that we've had in probably a year, so, it's a little bit of pain."

He says a lot of people are using vacation while others take layoffs.

MacLachlan says there hasn't been any indication of shutdowns in the future.
