NSGEU president says Sherbrooke Village workers don't feel valued by government

The president of the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union says they believed Sherbrooke Village workers would have a new deal in place if government officials didn't interfere.

Jason MacLean says there was a tentative deal two weeks ago; he believes a meeting would have been held to ratify the deal Monday night.

He says instead, it was to discuss the issues to the 56 employees.

MacLean tells The Hawk there was no official statement released from the provincial government.

"When the employer came back, nobody acknowledged that the government said no," he says. "But we already had a deal; so it's me acknowledging to you that the government interfered and they didn't want that wage package."

MacLean says the wage package had very modest wage increases.

He says you don't have an understanding of the work being done by his members until you visit.

MacLean says uncertainty isn't easy for the employees.

"First of all, they feel they're not valued by the employer," he says. "They also feel they're not valued by the government."

He says this is one of the best years in the history for Sherbrooke Village.

MacLean says he believes conciliation is on hold until the new season.
