Local sports preview (Friday)

St. Andrews' Declan Smith, Beaver Meadow's Ryan MacLellan and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles are on home ice in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Cape Breton hosts the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in their 2017-18 home opener.

The Screaming Eagles (2-0-0) won their first two games of the season on the road; the Titan (2-0-1) have yet to lose in regulation to start the season.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.


The undefeated StFX soccer teams are home for AUS action.

They host the Cape Breton Capers at Oland Stadium in Antigonish.

The men's game is a match-up of the top two teams in the 10-team conference; the first-place X-Men (5-0-1) have 16 points, three points up on second-place Cape Breton (4-0-1), who are also undefeated.

StFX is ranked fourth in the country; Cape Breton is seventh.

The X-Women (3-0-3) are third in their 10-team conference with 12 points, a point behind second-place Memorial; the first-place Capers (5-0-0), ranked seventh in the country, are perfect with 15 points.

The women start at 5 p.m.; the men get underway at 7:15 p.m.
