Alleged threat and knife incident on Guysborough Co. school bus

Police say a 16-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon following a knife threat on a school bus; the matter is being referred to Restorative Justice.

They say Sherbrooke RCMP were called Tuesday as a result of four youth being threatened with a knife.

RCMP say the knife in question was a folding utility knife- they have seized it.

Parents and guardians of students at St. Mary's Education Centre/Academy received a letter about an alleged threat and knife incident.

The letter from Jack MacDonald, Principal, states they became aware of the incident- involving a knife and an alleged threat to a student on one of the buses Tuesday; the letter was sent Wednesday.

Ford Rice, Superintendent, Strait Regional School Board, tells The Hawk the student was able to return on the bus the next morning; that shouldn't have been the case.

"This should not have happened and it's very unfortunate that it did take place- for that I apologize" he says. "When an incident of this type happens, it's an opportunity for us to review our policies and procedures and determine where changes and/or improvements may be necessary."

Rice says they are reviewing the policy for that reason; safety is the priority.

He says the incident was witnessed by a number of students.

Rice says he can't comment on discipline due to privacy issues.

He says administration, board officials and RCMP are investigating.
