Police say they hope for safe Halloween

RCMP say they want you to make sure your kids' costumes are bright so they stand out for drivers during trick-or-treating Tuesday night.

Cst. Morgan MacPherson, Antigonish's community policing officer, says trick-or-treaters should go out in groups because there's safety in numbers.

MacPherson tells The Hawk it's getting dark earlier, so they should use crosswalks whenever possible, and carry a flashlight.

"Have the kids carry a flashlight- it makes a huge difference," he says. "We're also suggesting that the kids only use marked crosswalks, and not to be in the middle of the street; if there is no marked crosswalk, walk to the end of the block, or pick a very safe location."

MacPherson says you need to slow down if you're driving; kids will be excited and can forget about safety, so it's your responsibility to be cautious.

He says there have been no reports of Halloween vandalism in Antigonish in recent years, and they want to keep it that way.

MacPherson says you need to be careful with candy or treats your kids bring home.

"Anything that's containing chips or that type of deal, be checking for air- sometimes there's more air than chips- but make sure that they haven't been tampered with," he says. "Same with chocolate bars- just to make sure nothing has been opened already."

MacPherson says they'll have extra members on patrol, and student-athletes from StFX will also be out to help in crosswalks in Antigonish.

Trick-or-treating in Port Hawkesbury takes place from 5-8 p.m., no masks are allowed after 8 p.m., and there's a 10 p.m. curfew for anyone 16 or younger; members of the Strait Pirates will be helping trick-or-treaters in the Tamarac Heights subdivision between 5:30-6:30 p.m.
