Port Hawkesbury officials say population retention and attraction needs to be looked at

Officials in Port Hawkesbury say population retention and attraction will probably be a hot topic at the Future Forward Leaders' Summit coming up later this month.

Town councillors received a presentation with data indicating the population decline in Cape Breton is a severe issue at Monday night's town council meeting.

Brenda Chisholm Beaton, Mayor, says a population retention and attraction strategy is very important.

After the meeting, Chisholm-Beaton said something needs to be done.

"We're bleeding people at a rate that's almost equivalent to a snowball that's going downhill; it's getting bigger and bigger as it goes along" she said. "What's happening with our population in Cape Breton right now, is that the slower depletion has been building momentum."

Chisholm-Beaton said the startling reality of population decline means officials will consider the possibility of a 10-year immigration strategy pilot project for Cape Breton.

That option was mentioned in the presentation by New Dawn reps.
