Local sports preview (Thursday)

The Battle of Cape Breton resumes in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Cape Breton West Islanders host the Cape Breton Tradesmen.

The Islanders (12-4-0), who have won three straight and five of the last six, are third in the eight-team league with 24 points, one point behind Halifax for second, and a point ahead of the fourth-place Valley; the Tradesmen (5-9-1), who sit second-last with 11 points, won the only other game between the teams, 5-3 in Membertou in October.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 7 p.m.

There's one game in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Dalbrae Dragons visit the Richmond Academy Hurricanes.

Game time at the Richmond Arena in Louisdale is 7:30 p.m.

Antigonish's Blade Mann-Dixon and the Halifax Mooseheads host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (11-5-3), who have lost two of their last three, are sixth in the 18-team league with 25 points, a point behind the three teams tied for third, and a point ahead of seventh-place Drummondville; the Drakkar (8-9-1) are tied for 14th with 17 points.

Puck drop at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax is 7 p.m.

The StFX women's basketball team is on the road for AUS action.

The X-Women travel to Wolfville to take on the Acadia Axewomen.

StFX (0-2) is winless to start the season, while Acadia (2-0) is perfect.

Tip off is 7 p.m.

It's the first half of a home-and-home series; the teams meet again in Antigonish Saturday night.
