Local sports preview (Friday)

Both StFX hockey teams are in New Brunswick for AUS action.

The X-Men travel to Fredericton to face the UNB Varsity Reds in a match-up of the two teams at the top of the seven-team conference- UNB (9-0-1) is first with 19 points, while second-place StFX (8-0-2) is a point back.

The Varsity Reds are ranked second in the country, while the X-Men are fourth; neither team has lost in regulation.

It's the first game of the season between the rivals.

The X-Women meet the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville.

StFX (6-1-1), ranked fifth in the country, is second in their seven-team conference with 13 points, two points back of Saint Mary's for top spot, and four points ahead of Moncton and St. Thomas, who are tied for third; Mount Allison (1-6-1) is last with three points.

It's the second game of the season between the teams- the X-Women edged the Mounties 3-2 in Antigonish in October.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

There are a pair of games in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The SAERC Saints visit the Inverness/Baddeck Academy Rebels in Baddeck at 7 p.m.

The Dalbrae Dragons host the Eskasoni Coyotes at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood at 7:30 p.m.

The Coyotes (3-0-0) lead the six-team league with a perfect record; it's the second game in as many nights for the Dragons, who beat Richmond Academy 4-1 in Louisdale Thursday night.

St. Andrews' Declan Smith, Beaver Meadow's Ryan MacLellan and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles finish off a home-and-home series with the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Screaming Eagles (11-8-1), who doubled the Islanders 4-2 in Charlottetown to snap a three-game losing streak Wednesday night, are ninth in the 18-team league with 23 points, a point back of Drummondville for eighth; the Islanders (108-1), tied with Val-d'Or for 10th, are two points back.

Cape Breton has won the first two games of the season between the Maritimes Division teams.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.
