Local sports preview (Friday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders play Pictou Co. for the third time in as many games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Islanders (20-5-0) are third in the eight-team league with 40 points- a point behind Dartmouth for second; Pictou Co. (8-16-3) is sixth with 19 points- 8 points behind fifth-place Valley.

It's the third straight game between the teams; the Islanders won 3-1 when they met in New Glasgow Dec. 22, and 6-4 in Port Hood Wednesday night.

Puck drop at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre in New Glasgow is 7:30 p.m.


There's one game in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Inverness/Baddeck Academy Rebels host the Cape Breton Highlands Academy/NDA Huskies (6-4-0), who are fourth in the six-team league with 18 points, a point ahead of fifth-place Eskasoni.

Game time at the Dr. Bernie MacLean Cultural and Recreation Centre in Inverness is 7 p.m.
