Local sports preview (Wednesday)

There are a pair of games on the local sports schedule.

The SAERC Saints visit the Eskasoni Coyotes in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Saints (7-5-1) are second in the six-team league with 22 points, two points behind Inverness/Baddeck Academy for top spot.

Game time is 7 p.m.


The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles play their first game of 2018 when they host the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The game features five local players- St. Andrews' Declan Smith and Beaver Meadow's Ryan MacLellan with Cape Breton, while Pleasant Valley's Jacob Hudson, Antigonish's Jake Stewart and Newtown's Stephen Fox are all expected to be in the Moncton line-up.

The Screaming Eagles (16-18-3), who have lost back-to-back games and seven of the last eight, are tied with Baie-Comeau for 13th in the 18-team league with 35 points, four points behind Moncton (16-16-7) for 12th, and two points ahead of Val-d'Or and Chicoutimi, who are tied for 15th.

It's the second game in as many nights for the Wildcats, who lost 4-3 in overtime to Halifax at home Tuesday night.

Cape Breton has won three of the first four games in the season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.
