Man from Inverness Co. First Nation named Innovacorp board member

An Inverness Co. First Nation man has been named a board member of Innovacorp.

Christopher Googoo is from We'koqma'q; he currently lives in Millbrook.

Officials say Googoo has helped hundreds of Aboriginal entrepreneurs in previous experience, and was a co-leader in the development of the Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq Economic Development Strategy.

The term goes until Sept. 2020.

Antigonish town councillor wants plastic bag usage reduced

A town councillor in Antigonish says he's trying to help reduce the use of plastic bags.

The idea of a ban on plastic bags was brought up by Ian Rankin, the province's environment minister and Halifax city councillors in January.

Jack MacPherson, Antigonish town councillor, says town officials haven't reached that point yet.

He brought up the reduction of plastic bags at the monthly municipal meeting in January.

MacPherson tells The Hawk he's starting by focusing on reduction.

"I'm trying to promote some kind of an incentive- when people take in their reusable bags and leave the plastic bags at the store," he says. "Eventually, the stores will cut back on using plastic bags."

MacPherson says he's been in touch with the managers of the local grocery stores.

He says he'd like customers to receive a small amount off their order if they bring in reusable bags.

Local emergency department closing for two days

A local emergency department will shut down for a couple of days.

Nova Scotia Health Authority officials say the ER at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston will be closed Thursday and Friday.

They say it will re-open at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Health authority officials say physician unavailability to cover the shift is the reason for the closure.

You're asked to go to another ER or call 911 with a medical emergency; you can call 811 for any non-urgent issues.

MacMaster says he's hearing concerns about attestation

A local MLA says he's been hearing concerns from people uncomfortable with a requirement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding summer grants.

Allan MacMaster, the MLA for Inverness, says constituents fundamentally have the right to have their conscience and have it respected, so they feel uncomfortable swearing an attestation to be eligible for student employment grants.

MacMaster tells The Hawk it sounds like you're expected to be on the same page as federal officials.

"What I've been hearing from people is that they're not comfortable making the attestation in favour of reproductive rights, which requires them to say that they're ok with taking the life of an unborn child."

MacMaster says applications are thrown out if the box isn't checked.

He says it's created a conflict.

"It's been very simple- some people have felt uncomfortable (and) they've chosen not to check the box, and some of them have written an explanation why," he said. "There are also people who felt like they had to lie and check the box to gain access to be able to apply."

MacMaster says he's listening to concerns, and the issues will be brought up to officials with the federal government.

He says it also needs to be discussed in the provincial legislature.

Man charged following reported gun threat in Antigonish expected back in court

A suspect arrested after police responded to a complaint of a threat that involved a gun in Antigonish is scheduled to return to court Wednesday.

RCMP say a man threatened a woman in the town one afternoon in January.

They say he told her he had a gun in his vehicle.

Police say they seized a .22 calibre handgun, ammo, a baseball bat and a knife.

They say officers arrested John Francis Gerroir, 54, outside a home on Braemore Ave.

Gerroir, who has been in custody since his arrest, has been charged with several firearms offences, two counts of criminal harassment and one count of uttering threats; he's expected for a fitness hearing in Antigonish Provincial Court.
