Local sports preview (Monday)

There's just one game on the local sports schedule.

The Antigonish Celtics host the Truro CC Riders in the Highland Soccer League U13 boys "A" division championship game.

The Celtics (9-3-1) finished the regular season first in the five-team division with 28 points, five points ahead of second-place Truro (7-4-2).

Antigonish had two wins, a loss and a tie in the four-game season series.

The winner advances to provincials in Cole Harbour-Eastern Passage Sept. 2-3.

Game time is 6 p.m.

 

Labbe grabs checkered flag at Riverside

Alex Labbe took the checkered flag at the Bumper-to-Bumper 300 at Riverside International Speedway in James River.

The driver from Quebec earned his first-ever win at the high banks of Riverside.

Kevin Lacroix, who led the most laps and dominated through the entire race, had to settle for second after Labbe overtook him with a bump-and-run pass on the final corner of the final lap.

DJ Kennington, who started from the pole, finished third; Antigonish's Donald Chisholm ended up 13th.

The race was originally scheduled to take place Saturday; it was postponed due to rain.

The Broadhorns (9-3) are second in the five-team league, two-and-a-half games behind Pomquet for top spot, and three-and-a-half games ahead of the third-place Warriors (7-8), who are two-and-a-half games up on fourth-place St. Andrews.

Guysborough wins the season series 2-1.

There's a double-header in the AGR.


The Heatherton Warriors host the Guysborough Broadhorns.


The teams have met once so far- the Warriors won that game 7-6 in Heatherton in July.


The first game of the twin bill in Heatherton gets underway at 1:30 p.m.



Two local teams have playoff games in the Highland Soccer League.


The Antigonish Celtics host Truro FC in the senior men's division title game.


The Celtics (6-1-2) finished the regular season first in the four-team division with 20 points, eight points up on the second-place Truro CC Riders; Truro FC (3-3-2), who advanced with a 15-0 semi-final win against Strait United Aug. 13, was third with 11 points.


Antigonish had a win and two ties in the three-game season series between the teams.


The winner is the division champion; both teams already have a spot in senior men's provincials in Antigonish Aug. 26-27.


The Antigonish Celtics visit the Truro CC Riders in the senior women's division with a trip to provincials on the line.


The Celtics finished the regular season last in the three-team division; the Riders, who had two wins and two ties in the four-game season series between the teams, were second.


The winner advances to U21 women's provincials in New Minas Aug. 26-27.


Both games get underway at 6 p.m.
