Local sports preview (Sunday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders are going for gold at the 2017 Telus Cup in Prince George, B.C.

The Islanders take on Team Quebec in the gold medal game of the national midget hockey championship.

Cape Breton West advanced with a 2-1 win against Team Ontario in the semi-finals Saturday; Team Quebec edged Team West 4-3 in overtime in the other semi-final.

The teams met in the tournament opener Monday; the Islanders won that game 2-1.

They are already assured of the best-ever finish for a local team at the event; the Antigonish Novas won bronze in 1981, the only local team to ever win a medal.

An Atlantic team has never won gold in the history of the tournament.

Puck drop is 7 p.m.; the game is being broadcast nationally on TSN.

The Islanders advance to Sunday's championship game against Quebec...game time is 7pm.

 

Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders have advanced to the playoff round of the 2017 Telus Cup in Prince George, B.C.

The Islanders started the national midget hockey championship with back-to-back wins, then lost their next three, including a 5-2 loss to Team West in their final round-robin game Friday.

They got the help they needed in the final two round-robin games of the tournament, and advanced to the playoff round with four points, good for fourth in the six-team tournament.

They'll face Team Ontario in the semi-finals Saturday; Team Ontario was the top team from the round-robin with a 3-1-1 record and seven points.

Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

Team Quebec faces Team West in the other semi-final at 3:30 p.m.

The winners of the two semi-finals advance to Sunday's championship game; the losers will play for bronze.

Logan Timmons and Logan Chisholm scored for the Islanders who finished the round robin with a 2 and 3 record.

The Islanders have advanced to the Semi-Finals where they'll meet Central on Saturday night at 7:30.

 

Local sports preview (Friday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders will try to clinch a spot in the playoff round when they play their fifth and final round-robin game at the 2017 Telus Cup in Prince George, B.C.

The Islanders (2-2-0) started the National Midget Hockey Championship with a pair of wins against Team Quebec and Team Pacific, then dropped back-to-back games agains the host team and Team Ontario.

They face the West entry, the Regina Pat Canadians (1-2-1); puck drop is at 2 p.m. Atlantic time.

The top four teams from the six-team round-robin advance to Saturday's playoff round.

Cape Breton West is in a three-way tie for second with four points.

They can clinch a playoff spot with at least one point; otherwise, they will have to wait on the results of the two later Friday games.
