X-Men stay put, X-Women climb in U Sports top 10

Both StFX hockey teams remain ranked among the best in the country.

The X-Men stay in fourth in the latest U Sports top 10 after a pair of weekend home wins- they beat UNB 3-2 in overtime Friday night, then defeated UPEI 6-1 the next night.

The X-Women climbed from sixth to fifth after two weekend wins- they beat Saint Mary's 3-1 in Halifax Friday night, then defeated Moncton 4-1 at home Sunday afternoon.

 

Local sports preview (Tuesday)

There are a pair of games on the local sports schedule.

The Cape Breton Highlands Academy/NDA Huskies host the Eskasoni Coyotes in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Huskies (2-3-0) are tied with Richmond Academy for fifth in the six-team league with six points, four points behind Inverness/Baddeck Academy for fourth; the Coyotes (4-1-0) are third with 11 points, two points behind SAERC for second.

The teams met in Eskasoni Tuesday- the Coyotes won 5-2.

Puck drop at the Cabot Trail Arena in Cheticamp is 7:30 p.m.

It's the first of back-to-back games for Eskasoni, who host Richmond Academy Wednesday night.


Antigonish's Blade Mann-Dixon and the Halifax Mooseheads host Pleasant Valley's Jacob Hudson and the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (13-7-3), who have won two of their last three games, and Wildcats (13-8-3) are tied with Acadie-Bathurst at the top of the Maritimes Division with 29 points, but Halifax holds the league's third seed based on one less game played.

The season series is even at a game apiece.

Puck drop at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax is 7 p.m.

The Dragons (5-1-0) move into first-place in the six-team league with 14 points, a point up on second-place SAERC; the Hurricanes (2-7-0) are tied with Cape Breton Highlands Academy/NDA for fifth with six points, four points behind Inverness/Baddeck Academy for fourth.

   

Hockey players sweep weekly StFX awards

A pair of hockey players are the latest StFX athletes of the week.

Michael Clarke, a forward with the X-Men, won the male award after he scored the overtime winner and added an assist in Friday's 3-2 home win against UNB.

Clarke also had a hat-trick and was named player of the game in the X-Men's 6-1 home win against UPEI the next night.

Emerson Elliott, a forward with the X-Women, is the female winner; she scored the game-winning goal in Friday's 3-1 road win against Saint Mary's.

Elliott had a hat-trick and an assist in the X-Women's 4-1 home win against Moncton Sunday; she was player of the game in both wins.

There's one game on the local sports schedule Monday.

The Dalbrae Dragons host the Richmond Academy Hurricanes
in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

Dalbrae (3-1-1-0) is second in the six-team league; the Hurricanes (2-0-6-0) are last.

Puck drop
at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 8 p.m.
