Councillor has problem with jury selection process
Tuesday, November 03, 2009 , 08:22 - 1015thehawk.com

The Inverness County councillor for Cheticamp says he has concerns about his constituents being summoned for jury duty.

At Monday's monthly Inverness County council meeting, Daniel Boudreau asked council to petition the province's justice department for an exemption for anyone who has to travel 100 kilometres or more, one-way, for jury duty.

Boudreau says it doesn't make sense for someone from Cheticamp, Pleasant Bay or Meat Cove to get a notice for jury duty in Port Hawkesbury.

"Some of these residents are fairly old, others have to lose a day's work," he says. "125-150 people go before the judge, and they'll pick 12 out of that group for jury duty- there has to be a better way to pick a jury."

Boudreau says council asked for 100-kilometre limit, but even 160 kilometres would work, because that's the distance from Cheticamp to Port Hawkesbury.
