School board concerned with missing students
Thursday, November 05, 2009 , 08:19 - 1015thehawk.com

The superintendent of the school board says the board is concerned with the significant increase in flu-like illness in schools across the district.

At Wednesday's Strait Regional School Board regular monthly meeting, Jack Beaton said 13 schools have now reached ten per cent absenteeism.

Beaton says the numbers are actually higher across the board.

"We're seeing probably 25-30 per cent of students with influenza-like illness," he says. "Usually when that happens, we have other students that are missing as a result of preventative measures."

Beaton says if it gets to the point where 40 per cent of students are out of school, the board would most likely send out an update similar to the one that goes out when ten per cent of students are missing.
