Councillors in the Town of Port Hawkesbury have passed a motion to rename the Port Hawkesbury Airport after a former political heavyweight from the Quad Counties.
Trevor Boudreau, councillor, brought the consideration from the Port Hawkesbury Airport Committee- it’s made up of representatives from Port Hawkesbury, Inverness Co. and Richmond Co.
The new name will honour Allan J. MacEachen; he passed away Sept. 12.
After Tuesday night’s council meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, mayor of the town, said the airport serves the entire region and MacEachen had a big impact on it.
“I really like the suggestion that came from the airport committee,” she said. “Certainly, Allan J. MacEachen had a tremendous influence on the development and building and everything- Port Hawkesbury Airport.”
Chisholm-Beaton said the decision of councillors will have to be brought back to the airport committee before the next steps are determined.
She said there was lots of new faces in municipal elections in 2016; it was a chance for new discussion and ideas on the airport.
