Municipal councillors in Antigonish Co. have received an update on Internet service in the county.
Parker Donham, a spokesperson with Seaside Communications, made a presentation on broadband service at December’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night; he also fielded questions from many councillors regarding service in their particular districts.
After the meeting, Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co., said Donham asked to meet with them.
“The last number of months there’s been a lot of discussion around broadband, poor Internet service and connection speeds,” he said. “He reached out to us, and it was timely, because we have a number of areas that seem like there (are) more concerns expressed, so this was a great opportunity to hear what Seaside (has) planned.”
McCarron said it was positive to learn Seaside reps already have some under-serviced areas on their radar.
He said municipal officials will try to work with them to expand service in some parts of the municipality, because it’s necessary to encourage growth.
“(We’re) trying to get home-based businesses set up with an opportunity to bring employers and employees into the rural areas of the county,” he said. “That’s critically important to the growth of the county, so we see it as a ‘must service’ in Antigonish Co.”
McCarron said they’ve also been in touch with other providers to draw attention to the need for better broadband coverage in the area.
