The vice-president of the WUSC Society at StFX says their X Talk was a great success.
Jordan MacDonald says Tuesday’s event was focused on hope and education for perspective on the power of potential education.
He says they had four speakers with different backgrounds share their stories and present their thoughts on education.
MacDonald tells The Hawk they’re trying to raise awareness for the class of 2018’s bursary directed at refugee students.
“Unfortunately if you’re a person of colour coming from a different continent as the result of a crisis or a humanitarian issue or discrimination for refugee purposes, there’s not a whole lot out there for you financially from the university.”
MacDonald says they’re very satisfied with the turnout and level of interest, and a lot of people were moved by the speakers.
He says the bursary would be a great support for students coming to our country.
“It would build financial security for a lot of the students who come to Canada as a refugee, especially if they’re people who are nearing the time where post-secondary education is an appropriate pathway for them.”
MacDonald says they hope to build an endowment of $50,000 for the bursary.
