Antigonish Co. councillors have thrown their support behind a request from their counterparts in the Town of Port Hawkesbury.
Port Hawkesbury town councillors have sent a letter asking their provincial counterparts to honour members of the Mi’kmaq community by adding ‘Unama’ki’ to the ‘Welcome to Cape Breton’ sign at the Canso Causeway.
Antigonish Co. councillors agreed to send their own letter of support to provincial officials at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting.
After, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, said the request makes sense to them on a number of levels.
“We just see it as an extension of the relationship that we have with Paq’tnkek,” he said. “We think it’s a good thing; we’re certainly fully supportive.”
Antigonish town councillors approved the same request at their regular meeting Monday night.
Officials in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough have already sent their letter of support.
