The idea of a ban on plastic bags was brought up by Ian Rankin, the province’s environment minister and Halifax city councillors in January.
Jack MacPherson, Antigonish town councillor, says town officials haven’t reached that point yet.
He brought up the reduction of plastic bags at the monthly municipal meeting in January.
MacPherson tells The Hawk he’s starting by focusing on reduction.
“I’m trying to promote some kind of an incentive- when people take in their reusable bags and leave the plastic bags at the store,” he says. “Eventually, the stores will cut back on using plastic bags.”
MacPherson says he’s been in touch with the managers of the local grocery stores.
He says he’d like customers to receive a small amount off their order if they bring in reusable bags.
