A grand opening ceremony for a courthouse in a Victoria Co. First Nations community is being held Thursday.
The Wagmatcook courthouse officially opens; the ceremony starts at 1 p.m.
Officials with Courts of Nova Scotia say the court is unique to our province; it’s one of just a few across the country that offers Indigenous restorative justice traditions and customs as part of the Gladue and Healing to Wellness court programs.
The court serves people charged in We’koqma’q, Wagmatcook and the rest of Victoria Co.
They say a sacred eagle feather will be presented to the presiding provincial court judge as part of a repatriation ceremony.
Provincial matters have been in the court since Apr. 4, while Supreme Court matters in the family division started sitting June 6.
A live-stream will be available here at the time of the ceremony.
