A suspect arrested after a report of a sexual assault in Antigonish has been convicted of one charge, and found not guilty of two others.
In an email to students, officials at StFX said a student reported an off-campus sexual assault to them in January.
They said she and a friend were offered a ride by a man and woman, who were not known to them, outside a pub in the town early one January morning.
University officials said the man, who was not a member of the StFX community, then assaulted the student.
They said police arrested him, and charged him with sexual assault, assault and uttering threats.
Robert Layes, 50, who pleaded not guilty to all three charges in March, stood trial in Antigonish Provincial Court in July; a judge found him guilty of sexual assault and acquitted him of assault and uttering threats Tuesday morning.
Layes is scheduled for sentencing Oct. 10.
