Officials at StFX have launched a lawsuit against the former finance director of the Coady International Institute.
James Edward Marlow of Lower South River, who was fired from the university July 19, has been accused of misappropriating close to $250,000.
A statement of claim, which was filed in Pictou Aug. 28, alleges Marlow created fake invoices from suppliers, requisitioned cheques from StFX for those invoices, and put the cheques into his personal account, which constitutes misappropriation of funds, theft and fraud.
University officials are asking for punitive and aggravated damages, as well as interest and legal costs.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
A StFX spokesperson says they can’t comment on the lawsuit specifically because it’s before the courts.
In an email, Cindy MacKenzie tells The Hawk they’ve reviewed their internal financial management processes to ensure future integrity and security, and their review found no other irregularities, so they’re confident the matter was isolated.
RCMP say they continue to investigate after they received a complaint regarding fraud at the Coady July 23.
