A local event will commemorate the 29th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
A gunman walked into Ecole Polytechnique, an engineering school in the city, and killed 14 women Dec. 6, 1989.
It’s the National Day of Mourning, and the National Day to End Violence Against Women.
Members of a local organization are taking part; a ceremony will be held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre at 6 p.m. Thursday.
It’s organized by representatives with Strait Area Women’s Place.
Jessica Simms-Barrs, one of the organizers, told The Hawk Morning Show we need to be a part of the change.
“It’s important because violence is still happening in our communities,” she said. “We need to be a part of changing that.”
Simms-Barrs said the ceremony will also include a pledge for peace and guest presenters.
She said guests include an author and an advanced paramedic.
