The Cape Breton West Islanders open play in the 2019 East Coast Ice Jam Hockey Tournament’s major midget division in Bedford.
The Islanders (0-0-0), the tournament’s two-time defending champs, meet the St. John’s Maple Leafs (1-0-0), who won their tournament opener Wednesday night, in their opening game at 1 p.m.
Cape Breton West plays their second game against the Fredericton Caps (NB) at 9:30 p.m.; their third and final preliminary round game is against the Saint John Vitos (NB) Friday afternoon.
The Novas (1-0-0), who won their tournament opener against the Eastern Express (PEI) 4-3 Wednesday, play their second game in the Ice Jam’s major bantam division when they take on the Tricom Thunder (0-1-0) from Newfoundland at 5:15 p.m.

The Richmond Academy Hurricanes host the Dalbrae Dragons in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.
The Hurricanes (6-2-1) lead the five-team league with 19 points, four points up on SAERC and Inverness-Baddeck Academy, the two teams tied for second; the Dragons (4-5-0) are fourth with 11 points, four points behind SAERC and Inverness-Baddeck Academy for second.
Richmond Academy has won the first two games in the four-game season series.
Puck drop at the Richmond Arena in Louisdale is 7:30 p.m.
The Halifax Mooseheads play the first of back-to-back games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
They host the Shawinigan Cataractes.
The Mooseheads (28-8-3), winners of four of their last five games, are tied with Baie-Comeau for third in the 18-team league with 59 points, two points behind Drummondville for second, and six points ahead of Moncton and Charlottetown, the two teams tied for fifth; the Cataractes (10-26-4) are 16th with 24 points.
It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Halifax won the first 5-2 in Shawinigan in November.
Puck drop at Scotiabank Centre is 7 p.m.
The Mooseheads visit St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the Battle of Nova Scotia Friday night.
