Recently, I randomly came across a tip online about how often you should clean the filter in your dishwasher.
I thought, maybe like you: “my dishwasher has a filter??”
Upon further thought, it occurred to me, well, of COURSE it does.
So. How often should you clean it? Every 3-6 months is a good idea (Some manufacturers recommend cleaning the filter every 2-3 weeks – check your manual if you still have it)
Last night I decided I was going to do it (sans manual – b/c I don’t have it – Google it is)
A word of caution: take note of how it is positioned BEFORE you remove it so you will know how to put it BACK.
My filter was pretty straight forward, a firm counter-clockwise turn had it off. And then….the gunk…..OH, the GUNK! This thing was gross. You know the gunk that comes out of the tub drain when you clean it out? Yeah, same type of stuff. I even found a piece of glass in there (thanks, former owners.)
I was also able to remove the spinning water spraying thingy (sorry to get too technical) and clean that with the aid of an old toothbrush since the underside of it was a bit dirty as well.
Then I had to put it all back. That’s where my 6 year old came in.
It took us about 15 minutes of trouble-shooting (yes, he’s 6 but he is good at figuring things out, just ask him) But we (I) finally got it back together (hopefully correctly) and I feel much better about the machine cleaning the dishes we eat off of with significantly less gunk flying around in there.
Next up: front load washing machine.
