The principal of the Nova Scotia Community College Strait Area Campus says college officials are excited for construction to get underway on their new student residence.
Provincial officials announced new NSCC capital projects in April, with a 51-bed, 20,000 square foot residence for the Strait Area Campus among them.
Principal Tom Gunn tells The Hawk the project, which is expected to cost roughly $7 million, is a great investment in the local campus.
“There are so many students that need good accommodations,” he says. “This will augment the accommodations that are available in the area.”
Gunn says they’ve awarded some tenders, while others are still to be determined.
He says construction is expected to get underway in June, and should take a little more than a year.
“We are still aiming to be open in Sept. 2020,” he says. “It’s an ambitious target, but that’s our target and we’re hoping to meet that.”
Gunn says the new facility will be fully accessible, and meet all the new accessibility and environmental standards.
