The Strait Area Campus opened its doors yesterday, as part of NSCC’s province wide open campus day.
Principal Tom Gunn say the event was good, they had plenty of local high school students come through, but the Nautical Institute draws people from across the province, and Atlantic Canada, who are unlikely to stop in for an open campus day.
Regardless, Gunn tells The Hawk, enrollment is up.
“We’re really pleased again; our enrollment is stronger this year than it was last year. Officially we came in at 632 full-time students,” he says. “That compared to about 605 last year, so we’re up. We’re very busy with part-time students as well, so overall there’s just a lot more activity on campus this year.
Gunn says their marine training is in high demand; about 1000 part-time students attend the campus, many coming from industry to upgrade their marine qualifications.
He says they’re also working to expand their support for the province’s fishing industry.
