The Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso says the CERB is a chance to consider universal basic income.
Mike Kelloway says the $2000/month pandemic relief acts, basically, like UBI.
Kelloway told The Hawk Morning Show that means it’s effectively a massive UBI experiment.
“Let’s review this, let’s study it, let’s take time to see the good, the bad, and the ugly about CERB,” he said. “Maybe, just maybe, (it’s) the impetus for the next evolution of programs that are going to help Canadians in the long term.”
Kelloway said it’ll be required as workforce automation grows, which makes this the perfect time to discuss how UBI could work.
He said he doesn’t know how much money would be required or how to best deliver it, but that’s why he’s put together a local think tank to explore what the idea would mean for the riding.
