The extended Christmas break had to happen.
That’s according to Paul Wozney, the President of the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union.
Wozney said, with teachers and staff out due to exposures and a severe substitute teacher shortage, there weren’t enough people to run some schools.
“Schools really were ghost towns,” he said. “There simply weren’t enough responsible adult bodies, in many buildings across the province, to operate safely.”
Wozney said it’s the least the province can do.
He said, everyone, teachers included, deserves to have a COVID-19 free holiday.
“It’s a very, very thin buffer,” he said. “To see whether or not people gathering at Christmastime is going to drive COVID transmission rates up dangerously.”
Wozney said Public Health rules are still weakest in schools and that puts everyone at risk.
