The Nova Scotia Liberal Party’s health critic is raising concerns about COVID-19 testing in the province.
It was announced today that PCR tests would only be used for those at highest risk, in a congregate living setting or integral to the healthcare system.
Meanwhile libraries across the province have started running out of rapid tests.
Yarmouth MLA, former health minister and current critic Zach Churchill says the unavailability of rapid tests is very concerning.
“We’ve got the omicron variant running rampant and if people don’t have the ability to self test or to get the PCR test, we’re going to have a lot of asymptomatic cases that we don’t know about,” says Churchill. “That means more transmission and more people getting sick.”
Churchill put out a call to Tim Houston’s government.
“We’re calling on the Houston government to make rapid tests available, particularly in rural Nova Scotia where we know the virus is right now and to really register concern about the reduction of PCR testing availability to people. To not have access to tests is a big issue.”
